When Christ walked the Earth in Jerusalem 2000 years ago four of his disciples approached him privately to inquire about the signs that would precede his second coming. This meeting and the discussion of these events was so important that it is recorded in three of the four gospels. Christ’s reply to his apostles is detailed in the book of Matthew in Chapter 24 verses 4-8:

Take heed that no man deceive you.
For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Can any of this be believed and more importantly is it true? If you are a Christian and a believer the answer is yes, of course it’s true. If you are non believer and a pagan of course all of this is just so much hogwash.

Before I get into the particulars of this prophecy it is important to understand that the subject matter I am going to cover has a lot of moving parts. The good thing about the moving parts is that they can all be easily confirmed by you if you have some patience. But first things first. The first thing that needs to be pointed out are the words that were used in the above prophecy. They are in English of course but the original words were written in Greek then translated into English.

Some Bible Background

The New Testament of the Bible was written in Greek. In 1611 it was translated into the now famous and long standing King James Version by the English monarch King James the First. In the passage where Christ details the events leading to his second coming the Greek word “Odin” was used and translated in the King James as the English word “sorrows”. In Greek, the word used for sorrows is associated with and is used in the prophesy as a direct reference to a woman’s “birthpangs” or the onset of the labor of childbirth. A Greek Lexicon defines the word “Odin” as: the pain of childbirth, travail pain, birth pangs intolerable anguish, in reference to the dire calamities that precede the advent of the Messiah. The use of the Greek word for birthpangs is quite apt in this prophesy. It describes, that among other things, natural events like severe weather, earthquakes, tornados, and storms will progress in number, duration, and intensity until Christ’s second coming. These changes are something we are all seeing right now as I write this post. The progression of these natural events also closely parallel events that occur in a pregnancy. One man in particular, Art Bell, dubbed these “birthpangs” we are witnessing as the “Quickening”. He did this in 1997.

Art Bell Weighs In

Who is Art Bell? Art Bell is a late night radio talk show host with the fourth highest listening audience in America. His audience is estimated to be nearly 15 million people. What is remarkable about this is that his show, Coast To Coast, is only on late in the night. Coast to Coast is unlike any other radio or television program on the air today. In addition to the usual news and politics Art deals with a wide variety of very unusual and seldom discussed topics. You never hear these topics discussed at any length on any other program. His show covers UFOs, alien abductions, crop circles, animal mutilations, the paranormal and alternate religions just to name a few. Because of this, his show acts as a magnet for millions of new age believers, alien contact devotees, and those who are hooked on or are just simply interested in the arcane, the bizarre, and the outright strange.

In his book “The Art of Talk”, Bell describes how he coined the term The Quickening and the nature of the items he has tracked over the years:

In all the years I have been on the air with my radio program, I have seen things begin to accelerate in nearly every aspect of American life. . . . The unbelievable violence, the defiance against authority, the blatant looting, and so on. . . . Other evidence of The Quickening, or the acceleration of things, includes the dramatically changing weather patterns; there is more violent weather than ever before. Earthquakes, hurricanes, and other acts of nature are happening with increasing frequency . . . People everywhere are beginning to feel the hair stand up on the back of their necks as if they realize something is about to happen, perhaps some sort of judgment. I also feel something is about to happen and all these accelerated things seem to point to the same conclusion. After several years of taking note of this accelerated trend (accelerated in mostly a negative way), I finally summed it up one night on the air and just called everything that was going on The Quickening.”

Art did not ever try to interpret the signs he cataloged. He deliberately stayed away from that because he was well aware of his audiences’ diverse opinions and beliefs. He was also a master at balancing his show’s content with his audience’s opinions about that content. Yet he has done something quite remarkable. By putting his finger on this uneasy feeling that many people share, even people that don’t listen to his show, he has brought out into the open the fact that many people have a premonition that “something is about to happen.” What does that mean? What does the record show about this premonition? Well…

Darwin Kills God

Everything outlined here started with one event; the publishing of Charles Darwin’s book on “Origins”. Up until the late 19th century science, politics and all of society, especially in America, was centered on and embraced the notion that God was real and that he created the universe and everything in it. This was evident in not only the lives and writings of our founding fathers but also in America’s founding documents the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. This attitude concerning the recognition of our creator and a reverence for him, however, all started to change in 1859 when Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or The Preservation of the Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. When it hit the public arena it was widely viewed as the new model of enlightened human reason. “Origin” then rocked the world of science, politics and religion because it seemed to make rational, scientific sense on how life unfolded on this planet. As a consequence, Darwin’s theory was almost impossible to resist and as the evolution theory gained general acceptance it began to dominate all human endeavor and conduct. Today, for better or worse, it forms the basis of all science, biology, politics and philosophy. The new paradigm derived from Origin is there is no God, God was made in man’s image; man is God.

The Societal Effects Of Darwin

From 1859 to the present, the number of human beings killed or exterminated by dictators, despots, tyrants, and other theory advocates easily outnumbers all the human beings killed in all the wars ever fought from the dawn of civilization to Origin’s publication. This number easily surpasses 300,000,000 human beings; all massacred by the likes of Mao Tse Tung, Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot and others. This is a staggering fact and as a consequence this is also where I have noted the start date of what Art Bell called The Quickening to 1859. These events of wanton slaughter from the late 19th century on, like all of those cataloged by Art Bell, started out slowly and have, as predicted, all increased in their size scope and ferocity since Origin’s publication.

An interesting point about Christ’s prophesy of events leading to his return was the caution to is disciples to take heed that no man deceive them and that many imposters would come claiming to be him. This is exactly what is being seen now. In the 18th century we had the appearance of 1 individual claiming to be the returning Christ. In the 19th century there were 7 men. In the 20th century the number rose to rose to 21. So far in this century, as of this writing, we have had 7.

Christ’s Prophesy Comes To Life

In the next part of the prophesy Christ tells them that…nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. Although that sounds too broad to be applicable, think about the present state of affairs in the world. The United States, once the biggest kid on the block, has now been put in a position of being the world’s whipping boy. We have gone from the worlds strongest country both economically and militarily to the worlds largest debtor nation. We are drowning in debt. We can’t even afford to threaten anybody anymore.

We have lost our teeth because the leadership in Washington – if you can call them that – has bankrupted us. And the sad truth is everybody knows we are broke. Russia is becoming more aggressive and is set for a nationalist rebirth gaining its former power and prestige. Any and all threats against Russia from the U.S. are ignored. Russia’s power rise is happening daily it seems. China is poised on the world stage to be the new dominate global economic power and tensions against the free nations of the world by their enemies are at an all time high. As of this date Iraq has been invaded by “Isis” an extremist splinter group of Al-Qaeda.

This terrorist organization looted the Iraqi central bank in Mosul of $429 million making them the most well funded terrorist group on the planet. They are now in the process of over running and capturing both Iraq and Syria with the plan of turning them into Islamic States. Events haven’t been this tense and potentially catastrophic since the advent of World War II. At least back then America had world class leadership to deal with the Nazis. The leadership we have in place in the United States today would never be confused with anything approaching world class. I can assure you our founding fathers are rolling in their graves because of this debacle.

Christ then ends his prophesy with…there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. Who among you would disagree with the fact that these exact things are happening before your very eyes. It is an undisputed fact that the world has been inundated with famine and disease. There are diseases that are being re-introduced into the population and that are rapidly growing as a consequence of becoming resistant to antibiotics. There has also been an influx of diseases that have absolutely no treatment or cure such as Ebola, the Hantavirus, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome or SARS, even a new drug resistant strain of tuberculosis. This is not even counting the devastating effects of AIDS on the worlds population.

These anomalies, especially the weather related ones, have been put off by some as coincidental or the effects of global warming. Whether or not this is accurate is anybody’s guess. I just point this out because of all the dramatic weather forecasts concerning not only hurricane strengths and frequencies, and tsunami activity, but also the number and ferocity of tornadoes and earthquakes spawned in places that used to never see them. When taken all together, these anomalies and their frequency should cause any intelligent person to pay attention.

The Most Disturbing Change

The most disconcerting changes, however, have taken place on a more personal level. Corruption, random violence, and mass killings have become the new normal in our society. From 1900-1999 the number of mass shootings, killings where 12 or more people lost their lives, was 106. From 2000 – 2013 the number has been 112. This is not counting the scores of deadly attacks where the lives lost were under 12. As a point to that fact, since December 2012 up to the date of this post – which is June 11 2014 – there have been 74 shootings in schools in the United States. It has become such a common fact of life that it barely causes a wince or a shocked look of concern from even the news people. What is going on? What is going on is exactly what the apostle Paul wrote would occur during the lead up to the tribulation and Christ’s return. This was detailed in 2nd Timothy 3:1-3:7:

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Wake up people, it’s already too late.
