Russell Brand, a self styled Hollywood actor and comedian, has put out a YouTube video commenting on Dr. Ben Carson’s views on gay marriage and abortion. See Video Here http://goo.gl/AnXGpa  The story and video ran in the Huffington Post on August 8th. Actually the comments aren’t really comments at all but are instead fairly vicious attacks on Dr. Carson’s personal philosophy and character. This is funny coming from a man with the background of Russell Brand. The trigger for his video rant appears to be the fact that Dr. Carson is considering running for President of The United States in 2016. But it’s not just that, it’s also that Dr. Carson is an outspoken conservative Christian. Apparently being a conservative Christian is a philosophical foundation that Mr. Brand wants nothing to do with; it grates on him like fingernails on a blackboard.

If you are not familiar with Dr Carson you should be. He is a world famous neurosurgeon, the former director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland and with the release of his book, “One Nation: What We Can All Do To Save America’s Future”, a New York Times best selling author. In Dr Carson’s own words the book was written for this purpose:

In February 2013 I gave a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast. Standing a few feet from President Obama, I warned my fellow citizens of the dangers facing our country and called for a return to the principles that made America great.

Many Americans heard and responded, but our nation’s decline has continued. Today the danger is greater than ever before, and I have never shared a more urgent message than I do now.

Our growing debt and deteriorating morals have driven us far from the founders’ intent. We’ve made very little progress in basic education. Obamacare threatens our health, liberty, and financial future. Media elitism and political correctness are out of control.

Worst of all, we seem to have lost our ability to discuss important issues calmly and respectfully regardless of party affiliation or other differences. As a doctor rather than a politician, I care about what works, not whether someone has an (R) or a (D) after his or her name. We have to come together to solve our problems

If you have not seen his speech at the national prayer breakfast and Barack Obama’s reaction to it this speech is what got everybody in America talking about Dr. Carson. It is a must see for all those who care about our great nation. Watch it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFb6NU1giRA

Dr. Carson’s warning is timely. In America today we are going through a massive shift in our national identity and none of it is positive. Anyone who has eyes that can see and ears that can hear will understand that Dr. Carson is spot on.

But who is Russell Brand? If you aren’t familiar with Mr. Brand he is a self styled Hollywood actor and comedian famous only for his past struggles with drug abuse, sexual addiction and a short lived marriage to singer Katy Perry. He has, to even a blind man, an extremely thin pedigree.

The present controversy started when Dr. Carson was interviewed on Mid Point, a News Max show covering breaking political stories. The show is hosted by Ed Berliner. In the interview the host wanted to get Dr. Carson’s reaction to two of the most contentious issues in America today, abortion and gay marriage. A fair enough question, and in answering Dr Carson was extremely fair and balanced in his remarks. He was respectful but unwavering in not only his personal views but the fact that his views and the prevailing conventional views of these two questions had a long historical perspective of being the unquestionable societal norms.

His answers, however, did not go over very well with Mr. Brand. On the video Russell rather than concentrate on what Dr. Carson actually said resorts to putting words in Dr. Carson’s mouth. Rather than being factual in his response, Mr Brand was only interested in mischaracterizing Dr. Carson’s comments and personally attacking his character; this is a common tactic used in debates called the ad hominem attack. If you can’t argue logically from the facts to win the argument you attack the other person’s character.

As a consequence of this tactic, the contrast between these two men is startling. Russell Brand’s comments on the tape were obviously self serving, transparent and designed to disparage a great man who is trying to do something positive for his country. All in all though it was enlightening to listen to Mr. Brand, you learned a lot about his character.

I have this to say about Mr. Brand, Hollywood, and the video. His characterizations of Dr. Carson came as no real surprise to me. Hollywood and many of the people who live and work there are well known by most of America for their lack of not only common sense but also their lack of tolerance. As long as your politics and social conscience are in tune with theirs then you are an enlightened individual. If they aren’t then you are just another mindless hick.

Rather than being the open minded and compassionate individuals they would like you to believe they are, these folks are in fact just the opposite, a group of narrow minded, bigoted, elitists. What better way to make your point than arguing with a television set? Isn’t that the cowards way out? It would have been a different matter all together and absolutely no contest at all if Mr. Brand had been on that set in front of Dr. Carson. But of course, he already knew that.
